HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?

Will I qualify for a Consumer Proposal? To be eligible to file a Consumer Proposal you must be insolvent (i.e. unable to pay your debts as they become due), have a total debt load of less than $250,000 (excluding the mortgage on your principal residence) and have a stable source of income. If you are currently having difficulty meeting your debt repayments, a Consumer Proposal may be better solution than some other options, such as a debt consolidation or credit counselling.

What happens if I can't keep up with payments? If you miss a payment one month your consumer proposal will still be active, you just can't fall behind three months of payments. You can always make up for missed payments later with no penalties. If something more drastic were to happen like losing your job, there is an option to amend the proposal to lower the payments to your creditors.

How is a Consumer Proposal different than Debt Consolidation? In a debt consolidation multiple debts get merged into one loan with hopefully a lower interest rate. Consumer proposal also consolidates all your debts into one payment but can reduce the total amount of debt and has no interest.
